Why an Epicyclic Set?Black & Decker must have chosen to use an epicyclic gear set for the Li2000, mainly because of the high gear ratio it produces while distributing the load across all parts of the gearbox. It also provides for a smaller, more compact gearbox due to the coaxial shafts which minimize the space needed for functioning. The epicyclic set also has multiple identical parts such as the planetary gears. This eases the manufacturing process and conserves material. There is even mass distribution throughout the gears, and the torque output is much higher than if it were a parallel axis gearbox.
